February is one of my favorite months of the year.  It's a wonderful time to remember to tell our loved ones that we care.

This mon th we have many learning activities and special events planned.  First, our 6th graders will be at Outdoor Education Camp the first week of Feburary .  Following that, the Eureka Schools Foundation will be kicking off the Annual Giving Campaign for the Eureka Schools Foundation (ESF) , please visit their website at eurekaschoolsfoundation.org .

On February 8th we will be out of school to honor president Lincoln... and on the very next evening, the monthly Eureka School District Board of Trustees are meeting at the school district office at 7:30 p.m.  More information about EUSD board meetings can be found on the district website.

The following Monday (February 15th) is another federal holiday, President's Day... and on the 19th, Report Cards go home.  Also on the 19 th we have a Bicycle Safety Assembly a nd you wont' want to miss the first annual ESF Art Auction.  Please see the attached flyer below for more specific information.

Just a reminder... on February 22nd students will be dismissed at 12:35 p.m. for Teacher Collaboration time.  During this time, teachers work on several district, school and grade level goals including:

  • reviewing the Parent/Teacher survey data and working on identified goals related to the survey (this year we are focusing on Parent Communication and School Culture/Discipline);
  • improving students' reading/writing/math proficiency;
  • analyzing grade level, district and state test data;
  • developing science/social studies units;
  • learning new technology skills for the classroom;
  • working on the district Challenge 21 continuum by developing integrated unit studies that include technology and critical thinking components.

Much of this work is also addressed before school and at lunchtime. If you have any questions regarding Collaboration Mondays, please don't hesitate to contact me.

If you'd like more information regarding events at Excelsior and would like to receive information via email, go to the Maidu/Excelsior PTC link to the left, click "Forms and documents" then click, "E-News reminder service."

Excelsior School Selected by California Business for

Education Excellence for Prestigious Honor Roll

Oakhills, Ridgeview, and Excelsior elementary schools were recognized recently by California Business for Education Excellence for their outstanding success in raising student academic achievement.  They are three of only 1,304 public schools in California selected to receive the title of 2009 Honor Roll school.

 "After reviewing student achievement data for every public school in California, these schools stood above the rest in getting students to grade level proficiency.  Schools receiving this distinction from California's business community have demonstrated consistent high student academic achievement and have made significant progress toward closing achievement gaps among their students.

"I am both pleased and honored to receive this award on behalf of Excelsior School.  It is truly a tribute to the excellent teaching staff, dedicated classified employees and supportive families who work collaboratively to ensure that our students are successful," said Diane Duncan, principal of Excelsior School.

This recognition program uses hard data, individual school and student subgroup performance data based on the California Standards Tests to evaluate school academic performance.
